We have discussed the possibility of getting a dog for several years now. In fact, we have probably discussed it since before we got married, which will be seven years in August! We never wanted to commit to it because we rented and didn't want to have to deal with all of the hassle. Then we had Hannah and dog sat for Jon's parents' dog when they were both about three months old (Hannah & Jon's parents' dog are only a couple of days apart in age). We decided that a three month old dog was WAY more work than our three month old baby, so we put it off again. Then there was Hannah...she LOVES dogs and babies. So since the timing isn't right for us to give Hannah a real baby any time soon, we decided that we could do a dog! Sounds silly right? But it's kind of true! So we decided that getting a puppy could be our frivolous summer purchase this year. We set out looking at a couple of different breeds, but settled on a dachshund because we are pretty familiar with their temperament. Jon's had dachshunds (or we like to refer to them as wiener dogs) in his life since he was 12 or 13 years old and since we live in a town home, we decided that a small inside dog would be best. We highly debated a toy Australian Shepherd, but I was really afraid simply because of the amount of energy that they are supposed to have. I wasn't sure I could keep up with a high energy dog like that during busy season when Jon has to work 7am-7pm and has to travel! So we are pretty pumped up about our little wiener dog! We found her at a breeder just northeast of Denver...
This is the sign that was on the front gate of their house. It totally cracked me up because it is pretty accurate! In case you can't read it clearly it says, "death from the ankles down." Wiener dogs have lots of fire in them and many of them suffer from "little dog syndrome" which is really why we like them so much! They've got attitude!
And here she is...our nameless little girl! She is probably going to be either blond with black-trimmed ears or redish with black-trimmed ears...when we looked at her up close, and according to the breeders they think that she is going to be a blond. I hope so because the blond adults that they had (including her dad) were beautiful dogs! We will just have to wait and see!
Obviously Hannah is super excited about the puppies! She is still talking about "my puppy," but that's probably because Jon keeps telling her all about the puppy. He says that we have to talk about the puppy a lot to get us really pumped up to bring her home. We aren't going to pick her up until the first week in August because we are going to be out of town a lot between now and then and don't want to have to figure out what to do with her during those times.
